Going to the source on small business friendliness

If you want to know how to treat the flu, you talk to a doctor. If you want to know how to speed up a computer, you talk to an IT person. And if you want to know which states are friendliest to small business, you talk to a small business owner.

They’re the ones who understand small business formation, how to meet regulations, the hiring process and so on. And if they don’t know something about contracts or leasing or corporate law, they typically know an attorney who can fill in the blanks quickly and efficiently.

Consumer service website Thumbtack.com decided to go straight to the source to find out which state is friendliest to business. The survey looked at several top areas of concern to business owners and to those who want to open a business: how easy it is to start a business, hire employees, deal with a state’s regulations and the quality of training and networking available in the state.

If you follow the link below, you’ll see that the survey also looked at tax-friendliness, zoning, health and safety regulations and other factors.

It’s probably not going to come to a shock to entrepreneurs in St. George, but Utah is in the top spot in the site’s survey.

Following behind us are Idaho, Texas and Virginia: all with grades of A-plus. At the other end of the spectrum are Rhode Island, Illinois and California.

Rhode Island, for instance, got grades of F and D-minus virtually across the board. While we know Rhode Island is a great place for lots of reasons, we’re proud of the way Utah has made itself into a location state for both commerce and quality of life.
