The Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce recently held its fourth annual Economic Summit. David Westwood, a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and a Senior Associate at Snow Jensen & Reece, chaired this year’s Summit. The Summit was well attended and included a full day of workshops, training, and distinguished speakers, including Southern Utah University Provost Brad Cook, EDC Utah’s Todd Brightwell, Lew Cramer from the Utah World Trade Center and Governor Gary Herbert who was the keynote speaker at the dinner held in Festival Hall.

Gov. Herbert noted the economic situation in Utah is getting better and cited the fact Utah is only one of seven states that maintains an AAA credit rating but noted that, “We will not rest until everyone who wants a job has a job.”

Gov. Herbert also recounted the many natural disasters that Utahans have endured this year, including the recent flooding in Santa Clara, and noted that he was impressed with the rate at which local citizens and communities respond to such issues.

“They get things cleared up much faster than if the government tried to do it,” Herbert said. “It’s a reflection on the people in Utah, the character we have here and the values we all share. It gives us the opportunity to have a quality of life that is becoming the envy of the entire country.”

Overall, the Summit was widely considered as a great success and a great opportunity for business leaders and the community to gain a greater understanding of the current economic challenges and success at both a state and local level. Thanks to all the people at the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce who made the Economic Summit a great success.
